When it comes to choosing the medium of education for their children, today’s parents face a very complex dilemma. There is an abundant rise in various schools catering to this demand, leaving these parents in a state of indecision. However, parents often lack the time to consider how beneficial or suitable this medium will be for their child. In such situations, influenced by the blind belief of keeping up with the neighborhood, they might choose the same medium without considering if it is right for their child.
Have we truly thought about our child in this decision-making process? Will they like it? Will they manage? Will it suit them? Who will answer these countless questions? Why should we be ashamed to teach our children about the soil we were born, nurtured, and raised in? Removing a child from their mother tongue, which they have been hearing, understanding, and learning since before birth, is akin to separating them from their mother.
Learning becomes much easier if the language that empowers a child to learn joyfully from experiences is prevalent at home and school. It is essential to agree that children should enrich their experiences by learning in their mother tongue while also mastering English. Ignoring the numerous benefits of learning in the mother tongue is not advisable. The language that allows my child to grasp new concepts effortlessly, to express their thoughts and emotions, to flourish in personality, to nurture innate talents, to develop comprehension, and pursue various hobbies should be chosen confidently by parents.
